For college financial aid purposes, a non-custodial parent is defined as a parent (biological or adoptive) with whom you do not live. If you split your time between two different parents, your non-custodial parent is the parent with whom you live less than 50% of the time. The term “non-custodial parent” for these purposes is not necessarily related to who has legal custody.
